Deep vein thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot in one of the body’s deep veins. Typically occurring in the pelvis, it does occasionally occur in other areas, including the arm and chest. DVT can increase the risk of pulmonary embolisms, which can be a fatal medical emergency.

Symptoms

Though there can be no symptoms of DVT, the most common symptoms are swelling, tenderness, and leg pain. These symptoms usually worsen when you walk or stand. If you’re experiencing leg pain, a sensation of warmth, or blue or red skin, contact us today to schedule an examination.

Treatment

There are several medications available to treat deep vein thrombosis, including Coumadin, Lovenox, and Heparin. Occasionally paired with weekly monitoring of blood levels, treatment by medication is usually the first option explored. In more severe cases, thrombolysis – a surgical option – may be necessary.

At Advanced Vascular Surgery, we strive to ensure that all of our patients are afforded access to a range of treatment options. If you’ve been suffering from leg pain, swelling, or tenderness, we encourage you to browse our site, contact us with questions, or schedule and examination today to learn more.
